For our August group art show, we have decided to return to the theme ‘Local’ which has seen two great shows over the past couple of years, attended by a range of brilliant, talented local artists of SE19 and beyond.
Come and meet the artists, enjoy a drink from the bar and view the works on sale and display throughout August.
Artists in residence throughout August
Gabby Cave - @dittoprintstudio
"Gabrielle Cave is a Penge-based illustrator and designer with a BA Hons in Textiles and Surface Design and many years of freelancing experience across illustration and surface pattern design. Her work is rooted in a love of the local area, from Crystal Palace and Penge to the park on her doorstep, expressed through a distinctive naive and cartoon style that is both whimsical and full of humour."
Jeremy Glover - @ jeremycglover
"Jeremy Glover, FRSA, LRPS, is an international award-winning photographer drawing on his many years’ experience as an Art Director and Creative Director with global agency McCann. Displaying a deep understanding of colour, form and texture his current project Pop Palace is inspired by the Abstract Expressionist and Pop Art movements of the 1950s and 1960s. A regular exhibitor in London and beyond, his most recent exhibition was a group show with the Saint-Tropez Photo Grand Prix in France."
Becca Hoodless - @beccahoodlessart
"Animal portraits and landscape acrylic art on wooden offcuts. A nature-inspired, local artist with a love for South London’s green spaces. I paint onto sustainably sourced wooden offcuts, often incorporating their unique shapes and grain/bark patterns into the paintings."
Frankie Parker - @frankielpart
"Currently my preferred medium is oil paints, and I am particularly inspired by the city I proudly call home - London. I have previously made work with textiles, ceramics, and lino printing. I owe a lot of my artistic journey to my parents who embraced my love of art, always allowing me to make mess with glitter glue and poster paints as soon as I was able to hold a paint brush."
James Nicholls - @jamesnichollsillustration
“James Nicholls is a London-based illustrator specialising in detailed, hand-drawn pen and ink illustrations. His work often explores themes connected to science and nature, key projects include an illustrated Periodic Table of the Elements and an ongoing series of intricate insect drawings. While much of his work is connected to science, he has increasingly been leaning into science fiction/fantasy with his British Transport Dystopia series. He produces original pieces, prints, and products from his Crystal Palace studio, and regularly attends art fairs across the South East of England.”
Ceri Stanaway - @Ceri.Stanaway.Art
"Having previously focused on oil painting, Ceri was inspired to move into pen and ink drawing by the simple beauty of Japanese line art. After initially creating in black and white, she moved onto experimenting with 'pops' of colour in her pieces, to highlight particular features in her art without losing the cleanness and simplicity of her original inspiration. For her subjects, she draws inspiration from nature, her travels, and her local area around Crystal Palace."
Michael - Catford Creative Club - @thegildedprintco
"I'm a printmaker based in South London, creating hand-pulled screen prints and cyanotypes inspired by maps, architecture and the places people feel connected to. I enjoy the slower, hands-on nature of printmaking and try to let the materials speak for themselves. Many of my pieces feature hand-applied gold leaf, adding a subtle layer of detail and making every print slightly unique. My aim is to create work that feels timeless, tactile and made to be lived with."
Matthieu Philippault - @art_with_lime @mbp_decoration
"Matthieu is a local artist and conservator whose latest work is inspired by his recent eight-month appointment conserving the local Crystal Palace Dinosaurs and Italian Terraces. Through this series, he celebrates the profound craftsmanship required to preserve these monuments for future generations. His pieces utilise the philosophy of Kintsugi—the traditional Japanese art of highlighting repairs with gold, teaching that fractures are a vital part of a structure's history to be proudly illuminated rather than hidden."
Bryony Wellburn - @Bryony_artwork
"Bryony Wellburn is a multidisciplinary artist working across digital artwork, illustration, and wheel-thrown pottery. As a self-taught artist driven by a deep fascination with local history, Bryony uses traditional and contemporary methods to create "modern-day relics." By blending illustration, watercolour, and ceramic glazing, she translates iconic local scenes into tangible artefacts. Her recent work is heavily inspired by delftware pottery, using its classic style to showcase modern-day snapshots that feel like discovered treasures. This approach is perfectly mirrored in the parks' recent restoration of the Crystal Palace dinosaurs - seamlessly bridging the area's rich history with its ongoing future."
Kate Gilbert - @kategilbert.talks
“Kate Gilbert is a local artist, actor, and writer whose work is rooted in storytelling. Across painting, writing, and performance, she is drawn to capturing the character of people and places. The two works exhibited here were inspired by an artist walk through the local area, finding locations rich in personality and local history. One piece reimagines Cornerstone road, inspired by its vibrant graffiti and infused with warmth and a Mediterranean feel. The second depicts DSolos, a much-loved Church Street clothing shop that has been a cornerstone of the community for 25 years, renowned for its carefully curated designer fashion.”
Brian Clements - @brian.clements_art
“I work in watercolour/acrylic/mixed media. My work flows between abstract and semi abstract styles dependent on the primary influence whether rural or urban. I use the landscape as a catalyst for personal expression.”
