'Beyond the Frame' August Artist Exhibition Launch Night

Our August Gallery Show ‘Beyond the Frame’ is an open theme and we are happy to host a group exhibition with a varied mix of styles, subjects and mediums. You can meet the artists at our Launch Night and get to see the full exhibition which will continue throughout the month of August. So, come and be inspired, enjoy a drink from the bar and find out more about our community creative space.

Exhibiting Artists..

Phil Cheatle @philcbristol

“A largely self-taught painter using acrylics. My work is inspired by landscape and the human form. After a long gap due to career, parenting etc. I returned to painting in 2015 eventually developing a distinctive style of flowing, blended forms. I’ve been exhibiting in art trails and exhibitions since 2022.”

Frankie Carvalho @Captures-by-carvalho

“I started my journey into photography a few years ago just after completing a few photographic holidays.

I'd always had a keen interest in photography but didn't know a thing about it.  I learnt studio and outside shots and the most intriguing was the darkroom work.  It was just amazing. I could work for hours in the darkroom.”

Carolina Delgardo @carolletta.delgado

“I am a multinational emerging artist living in London. I am exploring experimental abstract art, digital art and mixed media. I have a craving for creation and an appetite for expression, my most profound desire is to conceive a body of work that express an abstract universe not yet explored. Most importantly, I believe that I can bring a new perspective to the art world. I am interested in colour, texture, shape and construction of smaller elements that build up the composition. I am sometimes absorbed in the transformation of the medium or support of the work of art. I am like a sculptor of paintings, interested in the metamorphosis of the canvas and working with modelled objects building new compositions that have depth. In my approach I tend to do series of work of art rather than individual pieces. I think it is necessary to have the time to explore and push an idea further through iteration.”

Maria Makripoulias @makry_poulia

“Maria is a London-based collagist, designer, and visual artist whose interdisciplinary practice bridges the visceral and the cerebral. A self-taught creator, her work is deeply rooted in the interplay of music, nature, cultural identity, and corporeal exploration, combining her academic background in Modern Greek literature, and sociology into layered visual narratives. Under the alias ‘M’, she crafts striking artwork for record sleeves and audio-visual media, employing a hybrid of analogue mixed media—vintage ephemera, hand-cut paper, textured substrates—with digital manipulation to evoke fragmented yet harmonious dialogues between body, memory, and sound. Her work, recognised for its delicacy and tactile complexity, is fast establishing her as a significant voice in contemporary collage.”

Malcolm Turner @malturner_art

“A multimedia creative who enjoys mark making in charcoal, acrylic paint, heavily drawn to nature and landscape. I’ve been experimenting with 3D objects for the past few years to express my mental health issues. Originally trained as an illustrator in the 80’s with a leaning towards stylised work, after 16 years of work drying up, I side stepped into retail to make ends meet. I’ve continued to paint and create something I’ve always done from a child, an invaluable means of focusing my mind during periods of depression and in later life realising I’m on the autism spectrum.”

James Prior @jimmys_sketching

“An Urban Sketcher based in SE London using line and wash to capture their authentic responses to places locally, within the UK and Abroad. Like many I started dabbling in Watercolours over lockdown then was very lucky to stumble across the Urban Sketching Movement, and particularly the London Group. I decided to make some prints of some of my favourite sketches and have carried on from there!”

Lou Anand @loonar72

“Abstract Artist working in mixed media. I have been painting since childhood, using art to express my emotions and imagination, inspired by nature and a deep love of colour, I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and exploring how they interact. My creative process often begins with chaos, which I gradually shape into works that balance movement with moments of stillness.”

Phoebe Newlan @sketchyphoebe

I am an Artist and Actor based in Crystal Palace. My artistic practice explores the meaning of nature and the temporality of seasons within our changing planet. I am inspired by real and imagined landscapes, often derived from imagery around Crystal Palace Park. I primarily layer a mixture of oil pastels, colouring pencils and acrylic paint in my work, and more recently I have returned to a focus on form and tone through ink drawings. I have exhibited in a number of group shows locally including at the Anna Lovely Gallery, Tom Cox Gallery, and a recent pop-up exhibition at The Department Store, Brixton.

Ceri Stanaway @ceri.stanaway.art

“Having previously focused on oil painting, Ceri was inspired to move into pen and ink drawing by the simple beauty of Japanese line art. After initially creating in black and white, she moved onto experimenting with 'pops' of colour in her pieces, to highlight particular features in her art without losing the cleanness and simplicity of her original inspiration. For her subjects, she draws inspiration from nature, her travels, and her local area around Crystal Palace.“

Eclectics - The Nunhead Folk Circle

We warmly welcome the return of The Nunhead folk circle who are are a unique group of four musicians, Matt, Mike, Willard and Datsun who live around SE15. They play an original style of music and song. The two part nature of many of their songs is an obvious link to Congolese Jazz music but there are strands of influence from American Country, Latin America and English Folk and Pop music

The set up of instruments is fairly standard with Drums, Double Bass or Bass Guitar, Lead Guitar, and Rhythm Guitar. Then they throw in a few other instruments like Melodeon, Tambouritsa, Charanga, Favella, Ukulele, Mouth Organ, that each add flavour to their sound and keep the show interesting. Datsun, Matt and Mike all contribute to the vocal arrangements and have fun with the different rhythms which make the music fun to dance and sing along to.

Free entry with optional donations towards the musicians.

Comedy Night - Palace Panel Show

Could you do with a laugh?
Well, this lovely bunch of comedians will make sure you have one.

Join us on the last Friday of the month for a side-splitting romp through the week's news. It's in a format, not entirely disimilar to those TV panel shows, but this one is live and unedited, plus there is a bar.

Our team will bring you the freshest, topical comedy and an all-round fun night with a different line-up every month.

We’ve been gathering reviews from members of the Palace Panel Show audience. Here’s some of our favourite feedback…

“My husband and I have been to a couple of the Palace Panel Shows to meet up with friends, they were great nights, original comedy, with a fab intimate venue. Would definitely recommend to others.” Lisa from Tonbridge

“Surprisingly funny.” Sarah from Gipsy Hill

“I thought the way quotes work is that you write them then ask us if we are happy to be quoted? But from our very enjoyable evening in April, I would recommend the panel’s witty playing off each other.” Mike from Paddington
“A wonderfully convivial evening with just the right ratio of belly laughs and beer." Helly from Penge

“A volcanic blast of molten humour flowing into every orifice - bringing rapture and delight and being sure to burn the cockles of your heart!” Chris from Wallington

Fifty years later I am still painting. Mainly on canvasses now. I am inspired by natures shapes, patterns and colours. I first exhibited my work two years ago after retiring from my career in Fashion. My work took me all over the world, but I find the colours in my homeland of England are the ones that speak to me the most.”

Her workshops are a celebration of presence, healing, and creative freedom.”

Agnieszka Matras

@agnes_matras_just_art

“Agnieszka is an artist living and working in London over twenty years now. She considers herself a self-taught artist and she works mainly with oils and acrylics. Using limited palette and traditional approaches to oil paints she tries to convey the beauty of nature and magic of colour on canvas. She pays attention to light and its impact on subject matter. Experimenting with colour she accurately captures the mood and atmosphere of scenes in her art. She gets inspired by the beauty of sky and landscape as well as still life and animals. She doesn't limit herself to and subject and will get the brush any time her eyes meet the view that she can't resist to rewrite on canvas. Agnieszka is a member of South London Women Artists acclaimed group launched by friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery and a member of few local art communities in South London which promote art through workshops, art shows and exhibitions. She exhibits regularly within those groups.”

Daniela Fleckenstein

https://themissionisvision.com

“Always with an intrigue of establishing & exploring truth and finding authenticity: Daniela studied and absorbed experiences and cultures for years after obtaining her first Certification in the World of Arts (BA Art & Design) in 1999 with Distinction, shortly after relocating to London from Germany. Daniela went on to study at Chelsea Art School, with a slight change of directions from Fine Art to Photography and eventually graduated from University of Westminster with an Upper Second Degree in Photography in 2006.”

June Lloyd

My aim is to replicate what I see and translate it into something beautiful. In my watercolours I use a unique style to interpret the image, bringing vibrancy and life to my paintings. Through the use of colour and technique I create something that tells the story beyond the visual imagery. My grandfather started me on my journey to paint as a child and I haven't looked back since.

Crystal Palace Freelancers Jelly

Come and join our 'Jelly', sociable networking at The Paxton Centre for freelancers and those working from home. Our monthly meet-up on the last Thursday of the month starts at 11am with a 15 minute skill share talk on a relevant topic for freelancers followed by a Q&A session. Attendance is free but please make a purchase from the cafe to support The Paxton Centre.

Hosted by Kate Gilbert. https://kategilbert.co.uk

This month's skill share speaker is Akiko, is a local artist and energy work practitioner whose passion lies in helping individuals align with their true selves.

In her talk, Akiko will explore the concept of the 'flow state,' often described as being 'in the zone,' where everything feels effortless, and there's a perfect balance between skill and challenge, fostering optimal performance and creativity. She will provide a foundational understanding of energy flow and discuss how we often become blocked in our busy world. Akiko will contrast 'The Art of Flow' with 'The Art of Control,' highlighting how, as freelancers, the weight of responsibility can prevent us from enjoying the work we love. Through practical energy tools and demonstrations, she will show how to cultivate a more balanced energy flow, guiding us toward a more fulfilling and harmonious experience.

Arrive by 10:30am to give your self time to buy a drink, meet others and grab a seat.

This drop-in co-working day is a good opportunity to meet other local freelancers and local business owners. Light-touch, no stress networking. Refreshments: tea, coffee, soft drinks, snacks and lunches available all day.

Reserve a place to give us an idea of numbers or just drop in on the day.

Community Conversations

Community Conversations

Following on from our community conversations in Winter 24 and Spring 25, you are invited to our May gathering at the lovely Paxton Centre.

We thought we'd create another space for a facilitated conversation, with a chance to mingle
This event follows in the long tradition of successful community and green drinks by the transition town, but also open to being completely different !

Hear updates from some local projects
Get a chance to share what you're up to, and what you're interested in

It's a continuing experiment to re-open our community conversations after a long-break, but it seems to be really building momentum. We welcome everyone, from new faces to old regulars. Bring an open mind and a sense of humour.

7pm for a 7.30pm start. Free admission, but if you can, please support our wonderful hosts the Paxton Centre with a drinks purchase.

We'll hear short contributions from some projects as they confirm and add them to our list here. There will be also opportunities for informal questions. We'll break out for socialising and mingling once we've ended the focussed discussion.
